Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Women in Water, Sanitation and Forestry Awards

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF),
the Water Research Commission and the Water Institute of South Africa are calling for nominations for the Women in Water, Sanitation and Forestry Awards. The awards aim to honour and celebrate the work of women, and to highlight:

  • the participation of professional and community-based women, and
  • the key role women play in poverty eradication, education and sustainable development in both urban and rural settings.

The awards are presented to women who have played leading roles in water, sanitation and forestry in the following four categories:

  • Research
  • Community Development
  • Education and Awareness
  • Management and Policy-making.

Successful nominations will be by the adjudication panel for:

  • the use of knowledge
  • skills, and
  • considerable capacity to ensure that water, sanitation and forestry management in South Africa contribute towards building a South Africa that belongs to everyone.

Nomination criteria

Proven Record: Is/are the nominee/s currently working/ participating in the water, sanitation or forestry sector? What work has/have the nominee/s done in any of these sectors?

Innovation and Leadership: To what extent (how) is the work/project creative and original? How has/have the nominee/s displayed management or leadership qualities?

Project Management and Implementation: Describe how the nominee/s managed the project using resources such as money, people and time? Describe how the nominee/s used resources to complete the work/project?

Contribution to positive attitudinal and behavioural changes: How has the work/project helped others to change their thoughts, attitude or actions towards water, sanitation or forestry?

Contribution to development and implementation of sustainable projects: How has the work/project played a part in the growth and achievement of long-term (long-lasting) projects?

Contribution to public/community/stakeholders/role-player participation: Describe how the nominee/s involved the public or community members in the work/project and how the work/project has impacted on or affected the broader community.

Perseverance and endurance: Tell us about the challenges that were experienced, when the work/project was started.

Contribution to processes of decision-making: What contribution has the nominee/s made in decisions taken that affected the project? What decisions has the nominee/s made as a group/individual that has changed the situation in the project/work?

Accountability: How does/do the nominee/s keep record of all the activities of the work/project? And are these records available to be viewed if requested? How does/do the nominee/s report on progress of the work/project?

Motivational excellence : How does/do the nominee/s inspire or encourage him/herself and others to improve and achieve goals and objectives?

Nomination rules
  • Only completed application forms will be accepted and must include a 500 - 1000 word motivation about the contribution or role of the nominee in the water sanitation or forestry sector.
  • The award winners will be announced during National Women's Month in August 2007.
  • Hand-delivered, faxed, electronic and posted application forms will be accepted.
  • More than one category may be selected.
  • The same rules and procedure apply, when nominating oneself.
