Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

BBC WST Leprosy Project - Poster Power

Summary

“Wherever we hung the poster, people would run to see it. Everyone in the village has become eager to know more about the disease.”

— Jaykrishna Yadav, Bharat Scouts and Guides

Madhepura district, Bihar

The BBC World Service Trust produced a colourful poster for areas of Bihar with high leprosy prevalence and low access to mass media. This poster offered basic information about leprosy symptoms and treatment and stressed the importance of community care and support for people with leprosy.

It showed a real-life young woman who had overcome leprosy thanks to the support of her friend. “If there's friendship, this is it,” said the text.

The poster was printed in a quantity of 85,000 after pre-testing of messages and design. The production process was backed by a carefully designed distribution strategy in partnership with community groups and the government health structure.

The results were highly encouraging. More than 300 government health workers and community workers wrote to the Trust to praise the effort and request more posters.

An evaluation study by the ORG Centre for SocialResearch showed strong impact on knowledge about leprosy symptoms and treatment, as well as more than 75% recall of key messages.

Rural Awareness of a modern leprosy cure free of cost:
Exposed to the poster - 89%
No exposure - 20%
