Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has published a report describing various tactics used for online oppression worldwide, both physical and technological.  The publication points out governments alleged to employ those tactics and links to CPJ articles providing further reporting on the respective tactics in key countries.

The report breaks down tactics based on type, key country, examples and descriptions, and links to CPJ articles describing the "Tactics in practice."  It is noted that the array of techniques include both sophisticated, highly technical methods as well as more traditional approaches, such as violence or imprisonment.  The tools themselves and country-specific examples (some tools used under former governments), as reported by CPJ, to suppress the spread of information are:

  • Web Blocking - Iran
  • Precision Censorship - Belarus
  • Denial of Access - Cuba
  • Infrastructure Control - Ethiopia
  • Attacks on Exile-Run Sites - Burma
  • Malware Attacks - China
  • State Cybercrime - Tunisia
  • Internet Kill Switches - Egypt
  • Detention of Bloggers - Syria
  • Violence Against Online Journalists - Russia
