Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Going Green Film Festival

0 comments

The first edition of the Going Green Film Festival: REthink. REplenish. REcommit is currently taking submissions for its March 2010 event in Los Angeles, California, United States (US). This festival focuses exclusively on green filmmaking, from production to content. Prizes include, among others: hybrid electric bicycles, film and screenwriting software, and a film scanning session. The festival was launched to reward filmmakers who are promoting ways of producing film using alternative materials and environmentally friendly practices, both in the office and on the set.

Sponsors of the Going Green Film Festival include Fuji Film, 3Degrees Inc., The Daily Green, and Google Grants. 3Degrees is providing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for the festival as part of their mission to reduce the magnitude of climate change by funding clean energy and carbon reduction projects like the Going Green Film Festival. [According to wikipedia: RECs are also known as Green tags, Renewable Energy Credits, or Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs) - tradable environmental commodities in the United States which represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was renewable (generated from an eligible renewable energy resource).]

Films are being considered for three main categories:

  1. Green Production - where a film’s production worked to lessen the carbon footprint left on the planet (entrants will present sufficient documentation of this process);
  2. Our Planet - where the film’s topic covers "third world issues", ecology, nature, or the environment; and
  3. Hybrid/Alternative Energy Transportation - where the film features a hybrid vehicle, bicycle, electric scooter, or public transportation.

Films can be any genre, but must be between 20 minutes and 120 minutes in length and have been completed between 2008 and 2010. International filmmakers are welcome to submit; however, they are not eligible for the grand prize and those winning first place must arrange for the shipping of prizes outside the US.
