Understanding the complex factors to achieve high impact
Sanitation in developing countries is influenced by a complex set of interrelated factors that exist at multiple levels that include individual behavior, the existance of supportive environment and policy, etc. A single level intervention like health education is not effective in bringing a sustained behavior change in ending open defecation. Understanding the relationship of these attributes is important for designing strategies and behavior change interventions. Socio-ecological model provides a useful framework for a better understanding and addressing of multi-level and multi-dimensional factors. The social and behavior change communication should work at all level to achieve a maximum impact in ending open defecation.
