Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

Scrutinize is a campaign from the partnership effort of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa (JHHESA) and its 21 partners, the Levi's® brand, and the campaign incubator Matchboxology. The Scrutinize Facilitators Guide and toolbox is designed to help facilitate interactive discussions about the behaviours that place people at risk of HIV, using arts, culture, drama, and/or discussions in small groups. The guide is written for those who want to facilitate the topics as standalone workshops or as part of a series of workshops.

The guide uses illustration, gaming, "What’'s My Risk" cards, interpersonal communication, and posters, among a number of workshop techniques.

Scrutinize comprises eight animated advertisements (Animerts) broadcast on SABC, E-TV and in 307 clinics nationwide. The campaign aims to increase risk perception among young people (18 - 32 years of age) to HIV infection including: the risk of having two or more partners at the same time; the linkage between alcohol, sex, and HIV; and the exchange of sex for money or material goods. See Related Summaries below for more details on and assessment of this campaign.
