Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Practical Think Tank for Polio Communication

The PTT is designed to respect country leadership of the programme and enhance support to endemic country teams. The issues proposed for discussion will at all times be directed by communication priorities determined by the Pakistan and Afghanistan polio programmes. Hence, the PTT role is envisaged to be:

1.Listening to and discussing priority issues and challenges identified by the Pakistan and Afghanistan polio communication programmes.

2.Focusing on the priority areas identified by the countries for consideration during meetings held once every two months.

3.Generating sound evidence based and actionable ideas and solutions for consideration by each of the country programmes – for example in response to priority concerns related to community engagement, improving the evidence base and impact measurement for communication activities, or utilisation of digital technology.

4.Responding to specific requests for input on issues that arise for Pakistan and Afghanistan between PTT meetings – for example improving cross border coordination or input into the design of new innovations
