Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The United States (US) Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released an online toolkit titled, Pandemic Flu, Take the Lead: Working Together to Prepare Now, on its pandemic planning website. The toolkit is a collaborative effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and HHS with input from community leaders. It is intended to provide key information and tools for organisations to use to support understanding of the threat of a pandemic and to prepare for it.

This resource includes the following kinds of documents available for download in PDF format:

  • Talking Points, such as "How to get Your Peers Involved";
  • Checklists, such as "Food and Supplies Drive";
  • Sample E-mails, such as "Good Health Habits";
  • Fact Sheets, such as Pandemic Flu Basics";
  • Sample Newsletter Articles, such as "Stocking Food Supplies"; and
  • Posters, such as "Cover Your Cough"

In addition, the website contains charts suggesting activities to encourage personal preparedness and the tools appropriate for them, as well as activities for encouraging peer community leaders to spread the information.
