Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Latin American and Caribbean Network for the Defense of the Rights of Children and Adolescents (REDLAMYC)

The REDLAMYC is a network of networks that are national non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on childhood and adolescence active in defending the rights of children and adolescents according to the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). It was organised during the "First Substantive Session of the Preparatory Committee" of the United Nations General Assembly in June 2000 in the city of New York, NY, United States (US). The network members have been doing various activities at the national, subregional, and regional levels, working towards benchmarks for the region.

The component networks are mostly NGO national associations working on issues such as childhood, adolescence and youth, development, poverty, education, monitoring committees of the CRC, gender equality, youth leadership and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) promotion, among others.

Communication Strategies

The network consists of three subregions: Andean, Caribbean, and Mesoamerica and South Subregion. Among its activities, the organisation prioritises participation in spaces of decision-making related to children under the CRC on issues that are viewed as priority for countries, either by their magnitude or the urgency of response. For these issues that are viewed as priorities, REDLAMYC works to place in national and regional agendas, and it facilitates dissemination of information on them and contact between different actors.

Through REDLAMYC, national coalitions and their member organisations can exchange information, strengthen their activities, and develop new mechanisms and advocacy strategies for national, regional, continental, and global realities and contexts.

In addition, the network, via its website, has become a space for learning, communication, and mobilisation. It develops spaces for those situations of interest to its member networks and allows space for participation in making complaints on rights violations. It has a library of publications and bulletins and a list of links for the support of its members' advocacy initiatives: Child Right International Network (CRIN); Childs Right Connect; Comité de los derechos del niño de NNUU; ECPAT; Instituto Interamericano del niño, la niña y adolescentes IIN; Movimiento Mundial por la Infancia de Latinoamérica y el Caribe (MMI-LAC); Oficina del Alto Comisionado para los Derechos Humanos de NNUU; Street World Football; and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) - Oficina Regional para América Latina y el Caribe.

Key Points

REDLAMYC's 2013-2017 Strategic Plan builds on network programming focused on rights and plans to develop mechanisms for influencing public policy and legislation, as well as mechanisms for influencing investment and practices of state agents linked to the rights of children and adolescents. It includes the creation of mechanisms to promote participation.

Among other objectives, the network aims to track and monitor progress on the recommendations of the UN Study on Violence Against Children and adolescents (UNVAC), including public policies for childhood and adolescence in systems of Juvenile Justice corresponding to the formation and implementation of the National Protection Systems.
