Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

High Suicide Rates Among Mexican Youth

Summary

A recent study conducted in Mexico found that suicide is the second highest cause of death for Mexican youth between the ages of 15 and 19, a rate surpassed only by traffic accidents.

It is estimated that most of the 3,200 suicides annually in Mexico are of people between the ages of 11 and 20. The cities with the highest incidences of suicide are Yucatán, Campeche, and Tabasco. In Tabasco, suicide occurs ten times as often as in Chiapas.

The non-government organisation (NGO) Casa Alianza offers a 24-hour toll-free help line that children and youth in crisis can use anywhere within Mexico to find support and seek help. (The number is ACERCATEL, 01-800-110-10-10). Since the beginning of 2003, Casa Alianza personnel have received 126,133 calls, of which 160 were from young people considering suicide.

Experts point to open communication between parents and children as the single most effective means of preventing suicide.

I was frusterated because the link to the full article didn't work.
Also, I was looking for information on Mexican-Amercians, and the title said Mexican-Americans, but the article only talked about suicides in Mexico.

Editor's note: Thank you for alerting us to the dead link. We have found a new one.
