Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This handbook contains a series of articles and case studies which outline theoretical approaches and practical applications of sustainability research. The publication is "directly aimed at supporting the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)".

The handbook contains four sections:
  1. Theoretical aspects of sustainability
  2. Practical approaches to sustainability research
  3. Education for sustainability
  4. Lessons learned and conclusions
The first part contains articles on theoretical approaches to sustainability research. The second section contains real world examples of the application of these approaches. Part three of the volume focuses on education as a means of raising awareness on sustainability issues. The volume ends with a final discussion from the editor of the lessons learned from this research.

This publication is volume 20 in the series "Environmental Education, Communication and Sustainability".
