Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

1. Media That Matters Film Festival

Seeking entries of social-issue short films on any social or environmental issue. Winning films will have a New York City, NY, United States (US), premier, and there will be an awards ceremony and industry networking events. Films will take part in the Media That Matters multi-platform campaign with DVD distribution, broadcasts, streaming, and international screenings.

2. CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards

Inviting African professional journalists and freelancers working on the continent for media organisations to submit entries in print, television, internet, radio, or photographic media. There are 17 prizes - one prize for each of the 16 categories and a prize for the overall winner who will have the opportunity to participate in the CNN Journalism Fellowship at CNN Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, US.

3. NASW Science in Society Journalism Awards

Offering awards for outstanding investigative or interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact for good and bad - especially the kind of critical, probing article that would not receive an award from an interest group. Separate cash prizes of US$2,500 will be awarded for writing judged best in each of these 3 categories: books, periodicals (newspaper and magazine), and electronic media (radio, television, and the internet).

4. Best Practices that Incorporate a Gender Equality Perspective in Health of Adolescents and Youth

Acknowledging experiences in the Americas that incorporate gender equality in health into work with adolescents and youth. The objective of the competition is to identify the health experiences that better address the differential needs and opportunities of men and women in health - a gender-sensitive approach.

5. The Grantham Prize

Inviting entries for the annual US$75,000 Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment by media in the US and Canada. The purpose of the prize is to encourage outstanding coverage of the environment, to recognise reporting that has the potential to bring about constructive change, and to broadly disseminate the prize-winning story to increase public awareness and understanding of issues focusing on the environment.

7. Excellence in Media Award for Global Health

Recognising the role played by the media in informing the public, as well as decision-makers, and seeking to highlight the winner's contributions to understanding and action. The award is given each year to a journalist (print, electronic, and/or visual) who has in the prior year most effectively captured the essence of a major issue in global health and conveyed it to a broad audience.

8. King Baudouin International Development Prize

Inviting nominations for the King Baudouin International Development Prize, which is presented every 2 years to reward the work of persons or organisations that have made a substantial contribution to the development of countries in the Southern Hemisphere.

9. Harry Chapin Media Awards

 

Honouring print and electronic media for outstanding coverage of hunger and economic poverty and the underlying root causes of these problems.

10. Red Ribbon Award: Celebrating Community Leadership and Action on AIDS

Recognising community organisations for their outstanding leadership and action on AIDS. This is a biennial award.

11. IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards

Seeking nominations from around the world for the Courage in Journalism Awards and Lifetime Achievement Award. These awards honour women working in the news media who have demonstrated extraordinary strength of character in pursuing their profession under difficult or dangerous circumstances.

12. The Tech Awards

Honouring innovators from around the world who use technology to benefit humanity. Three Laureates in each category are honoured, and one Laureate per category receives US$50,000. The purpose of The Tech Awards programme is to "inspire global engagement in applying technology to…address the most urgent issues facing our planet."

13. Lola Kenya Screen 2010 Film Awards

Seeking to place production tools in the hands of children and youth for the advancement of literacy, gender equity, self-expression, and democracy in their world. The film festival comprises a production workshop, film exhibition, and an audiovisual media platform for marketing, promoting, and distributing films.

14. Louise Lown Heart Hero Award

Recognising community-based programmes (non-profit, governmental, or private sector) working to promote heart health in developing countries or other low-resource settings (i.e., disadvantaged communities in developed countries) through innovative preventive approaches.

15. Justice Initiative Fellows Program at Central European University

Announcing a 2-year programme of study and practical work experience intending to support and further develop a network of 10 lawyers and activists working on human rights-related issues internationally.

16. Nieman Fellowships in Global Health

Reporting Awarding 2 Nieman Fellowships in Global Health Reporting for the academic year, one to a US citizen and one to a non-US citizen. The fellows will spend one academic year at Harvard University in the US, followed by 3-4 months of field work in a developing country.

17. Fellows Program in Population Policy Communications

Accepting applications from doctoral-level students from developing countries who are in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of studies in family planning and/or reproductive health at academic institutions in the US or Canada.

22. Humphrey Fellowship Program: Journalism Fellowships

Offering a 10-month stay at a journalism college in the US to study journalism and undertake professional affiliations at US news organisations. Applicants should have a minimum of 5 years of substantial professional experience, limited or no experience in the US, and demonstrated leadership qualities and commitment to their communities.

23. The IJP Journalists' Bursaries

Inviting applications for participation in an exchange of German journalists with international colleagues. For every German journalist taking part in a programme abroad, a foreign colleague will have the opportunity to work in a German media organisation. Where requested by media organisations or bursary sponsors, participants can also initiate a direct exchange.

24. International Service for Human Rights Internships

Seeking interns to observe and learn about both the United Nations (UN) human rights system and the international human rights non-governmental community through full- and part-time internships from 3-6 months at the Geneva, Switzerland, Office of the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR).

25. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Programme

Providing opportunities for advanced study to individuals from any one of 22 countries who will use this education to become leaders in their respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. The fellowship provides support for up to 3 years of formal graduate-level study leading to a masters or doctoral degree.

26. African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) Small Grants Programme (SGP)

Supporting small, community/rural-based grassroots women's groups in Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. The SGP also supports emerging or emergency issues.
