Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

AGEING

We live in an ageing world. The world is 'shrinking' through global communication and 'maturing' with global ageing. Demographers predict that if current trends in ageing continue as predicted, a demographic revolution will reveal the proportions of the young and the old undergo a historic crossover which will be felt in just 3 generations.

TRENDS

1. Population size doubled from 3 to 6 billion between 1960 and 1999. The previous doubling from 1.5 billion took twice as long.

2. In 2000, there were 600 million people aged 60 and over; there will be 1.2 billion by 2025 and 2 billion by 2050. Soon, every 3rd individual will be over the age of 60.

3. Today, about 2/3 of all older people are living in the developing world; by 2025, it will be 75%.

4. In the developed world, the very old (age 80+) is the fastest growing population group.

5. Women outlive men in virtually all societies; in very old age, the ratio of women/men is 2:1.

At the same time, older people provide a precious, often-ignored resource that makes an important contribution to the socioeconomic fabric of our lives'. Contact: activeageing@who.int
