Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Development, the quarterly journal of the Society for International Development, explores issues of human centred development, including alternative perspectives on civil society, development policy, and community-based strategies. The Society for International Development (SID) is an international non-governmental network of individuals and organisations founded in 1957 to promote social justice and foster democratic participation. The journal's contents focus on development policies, practices, and institutions working for economic and social justice, human progress, environmental rights, gender equity, equality and freedom.

In 2007 Development will celebrate 50 years of publishing with 5 issues for the year on the following topics: democracy, poverty, China, migration, and a special issue on 'The power of ideas: celebrating 50 years of development.'

The journal aims to:
  • Provide a resource and point of reference for the dialogue between activists and intellectuals committed to the search for alternative paths of social transformation towards a more sustainable and just world.
  • Tackle current issues, listening to the oppositional voices and bringing in local and innovative perspectives from the margins to the global development discourse.
  • Explore collective initiatives at local, regional and international levels which promote sustainable livelihoods, gender equality and women's empowerment.

Development aims to connect mainstream development policy and research with activism and alternative thinking.
