Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Advocacy Internship Programme 2007

The National Centre for Advocacy Studies (NCAS), a social change resource centre based in Pune, India, seeks candidates for its 2007 Advocacy Internship Programme. The 18-month Advocacy Internship Programme integrates activism and conceptual understanding of social issues with the aim of training energetic young men and women in rights-based perspective and people-centred advocacy.



The programme will include an 11-month multi-disciplinary curriculum and syllabus focusing on understanding the Indian society, polity and economy; issues in new social movements; concept and practice of people-centred advocacy; and contemporary human rights activism, practical knowledge of policy analysis, strategic planning, communication, research, campaign building and networking. Interns will also be placed with an advocacy organisation for six months, and spend two months writing a dissertation on any aspect of the advocacy efforts of the field organisation.



Each intern will be given a monthly stipend towards living expenses in Pune for a period of 12 months. During the 6 months placement, NCAS takes the responsibility of negotiating with the field organisation for the boarding, lodging and a minimum amount of stipend. There are also provisions for a limited contingency amount to reimburse the purchase of books during the internship period.



Candidates should be 20-25 years-old, have a post-graduate degree in any discipline or an undergraduate degree with at least two years experience with a social action/ human rights/consumer rights group. Candidates should have an interest in and commitment to social justice and an openness to learn and look at issues from diverse angles.



After preliminary screening of applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in a youth camp in Pune during the month of July 2007. Final selection of the candidates will be done after this camp on the basis of potential to work with people, competence, leadership qualities and vision
