Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

(Apologies if you receive below twice. We wanted to share with both the Health Social and Behaviour Change and Social Change  networks within The Communication Initiative network and platform process)

Many best wishes and a quick reminder of the 2020 Social and Behavior Change Communication Summit to be held in Marrakech, Morocco from March 30th to April 3rd 2020. Very much hope that you are able to attend and participate. Your insights, analysis and ideas for advancing the SBCC field of work will be of significant value for the success of this event. There is a summary introduction to the Summit at this link with further links to the Summit web site and registration form

800 people attended the 2016 event in Addis Ababa (insights here); 1,200 people attended the Nusa Dua event in 2018 (insights here); and, there is expectation of the continuation of that trend with a very significant increase in that number of people participating in Marrakech.

A quick reminder of the main themes for the 2020 SBCC Summit in Marrakech:

1. Catalyzing transformational change on agendas of urgency - includes the urgent, interconnected areas of climate crisis and global heating; gender equity; community engagement and citizen action; health access and equity; and, humanitarian action

2. Future Forward - includes a focus on: understanding and engaging with evolving digital and technological innovations; developing and promoting a code of ethics for the SBCC field; identifying new theories, frameworks and methodologies; and, countering negative opposition, disinformation and fake news.

3. Connecting the Dots - includes exploring: optimizing our strengths for greater impact; connecting with new partners; and, collective action.

There will be Spanish, French, English and Arabic translation.

As above the summary of the Summit is here at this link along with further links to the Summit site and online registration form.

If you are interested in insights and knowledge from the 2016 and 2018 Summits in Addis Ababa and Nusa Dua can we suggest this collation of the knowledge shared in 2016 (with filters so that you can narrow to your areas of interest) and the draft declaration and online debate on that draft from the 2018 Summit at this link.
